firenze and brimstone
11:12am 24/07/2006
  hello.
as i write this, i am sitting in an internet cafe which is slightly stuffy, in firenze (florence to all you underlings). its beautiful.i like it. yesterday we went to this amazing festival; the festival of unity. people come from miles around to talk about unity. and generally party about it. so, to set the scene a bit, it is an old fortress to the untrained eye, but behind the high walls around which the bats swoop at dusk, a twenty-four-hour seven-day-a-week party ensues. live music, market stalls, fresh fish, barbeques, funny looking people, raves - the works. tye-dye seems big over here too. which is awful. but the xenia (hospitality to all you underlings) of all of these people makes it okay. after the fest, we went for a late-night horror session at the exhibition of serial killers and capital punishment. very gory and graphic. john wayne gacy, ted bundy, michael barrymore - the works.

anyway, florence is great, rome was a beaut and naples was... well, naples.

homeward bound. we go to venice tomorrow, then a day or so after that, we traverse the wild and perilous plains of la francais. the mosquitoes are real killers here. but so is ed's sandal, so we're staying safe.

peace, love and unity to all

we're in italy!
06:08pm 18/07/2006
so we took a very long ferry ride, and have ended up in napoli (naples), the home of the pizza napoli. sweet. we're off to rome tomorrow morning, and we have begotten a new found love for melon syrup slush stuff. its amazing. we're bringing it home to manchester. the street food here is fantastic, and we haven't had one sit down meal in italy since arriving. we visited the ancient site of herculaneum, and the part we wanted to see (the villa de papyri) was CLOSED. crud. so, we traipsed through the rest of herculaneum with an empty heart, as interesting as it was (it was interesting!). and to make matters worse, both of us got pooed on by a pigeon - the same one. it was a double attack. it was messy. however, we kept our chins held high, and a kind italian woman supplied us with tissues with which to wipe up the evidence. then we went back to napoli, and to the archaeological museum. why did it have to be closed on tuesdays of all days?! not fair. so, we drowned our sorrows with the amazing melon slush stuff, and bought our own for home-use.
just over half way through now - already on the downhill slope!
home before you know it!

we're still alive
06:13pm 13/07/2006
just thought we'd let you know that we haven't been killed off by giant bugs yet. although we have come close. cockroaches roam free in greece. as do gorgons and the minotaur. but we haven't encountered such mythical beasts yet.
we sail for the sanctuary of olympia tomorrow.

close encounters of the third kind
11:56am 11/07/2006

this is what welcomes us into mycenae. what you are seeing here is, in fact, a hornet devouring a tarantula. the hornet is a couple of inches long. holy cow.

here is some more eye candy from our trip!

by the way, duncan risked life and limb taking that photo of the beasts in combat. i think we all know that is deserving of a little kleos.

we just saw a hornet devouring a tarantula and then we got swarmed by those little nasties. we were literally floored on the marble steps of mycenae, as if a sacrifice to zeus. pictures to follow.

departing athens
07:16pm 07/07/2006
duncan > after a fantastic stay in athens, which has involved meeting a new friend (katie, a highly knowledgable archaeologist), seeing all the sites (acropolis, national archaeological museum) and a little stomach upset, we're moving on a day early to corinth tonight. there are so many awesome photos we have taken, including a very shocked ed as he realised the flash was still on in the museum.

ed > we've done a lot of cool stuff. like seeing the acropolis and the temple of olympian zeus. these places are masif. go team greece!

we are here
09:47am 04/07/2006
dunc > so we finally arrived, and after a fairly strenuous ride, we reached hostel aphrodite. the flight was great, and although the trains were super complicated, they were much nicer than those in the uk. we are just off to get something to eat, and photos will follow!

ed > we are in a pretty urban part of athens, and its pretty noisy but our room is nice. it has a sink, a bed and a window! going to get a drink and perhaps some food... free drink on arrival tonight. safe and sound.
